A sour stomach is always believed to be a result of a heavy meal or a spicy curry. But studies reveal that there is much more behind that common burning sensation. Stomach acid, especially hydrochloric acid, plays a vital role in digestion. When its levels swing too high or too low, it can throw the entire system off balance. Recognising acid-related symptoms early can prevent long-term discomfort and help restore healthy digestion.

One of the most common signs of excessive stomach acid is heartburn, a burning feeling rising through the chest or upper abdomen. Dr Surakshith TK, Senior Consultant in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Fortis Escorts, Okhla, tells Moneycontrol, “It tends to flare up after heavy, oily or spicy meals and often worsens when lying down. Some people also report a sour or bitter taste creeping into the mouth, a tell-tale sign of acid reflux.”
