Ever felt your heart suddenly flutter, race, or feel like it’s skipping a beat? That could be a heart rhythm problem, also called an arrhythmia. It means your heart isn’t beating in a regular pattern. While it’s not always serious, it’s important to pay attention and talk to a doctor if it keeps happening.
According to the National Health Service (NHS), heart rhythm problems happen when your heart beats too fast, too slow, or in an irregular way. These changes can cause different symptoms like a fluttering or pounding heart, dizziness, chest discomfort, tiredness, or shortness of breath.
Research reveals that the heart’s rhythm is controlled by electrical signals. When these signals get out of sync, the rhythm can become irregular, leading to sensations like heart palpitations or dizziness.

The NHS suggests that these episodes might last only a few seconds, but if they keep happening or worsen, it’s important to seek medical advice. If you feel these symptoms often, or they’re becoming more intense, don’t ignore them. Some types of arrhythmia can increase the risk of serious issues like stroke or heart failure if left untreated. A check-up with a doctor can help determine if further action is needed.
Risk factors:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that the risk of arrhythmia, also known as atrial fibrillation (AFib), increases with age, with high blood pressure accounting for about 1 in 5 cases. Other risk factors include obesity, diabetes, heart failure, ischemic heart disease, hyperthyroidism, chronic kidney disease, heavy alcohol use, smoking, and enlargement of the heart's left chambers.

Here are 5 signs your heart rhythm might need attention:
- Fluttering or pounding heartbeat: It may feel like your heart is racing, flipping, or skipping beats, even when you’re not active.
- Dizziness or feeling faint: An irregular heartbeat can affect blood flow, making you feel lightheaded or like you might pass out.
- Shortness of breath: You could feel unusually breathless doing simple activities or even when resting.
- Feeling tired all the time: A heart that’s not beating properly can leave you feeling more fatigued than usual.
- Chest pain or discomfort: Some people may experience a feeling of tightness or pain in the chest, which should always be checked by a doctor.
