You love coconut water and other fruity coolers to beat the rising temperatures. But have you tried ice apple yet? Traditionally enjoyed for its natural cooling effect, this translucent, jelly-like fruit is now catching the attention of nutrition researchers. Experts say it’s time we start recognising its wider health benefits, including skin health to blood sugar control.

According to a study in the PubMed, Borassus flabellifer L., commonly called Asian palmyra or ice apple, is a popular summer fruit in South and Southeast Asia. In parts of India, it’s known as nungu and has been enjoyed for generations, especially during hot weather.

The scientists found the fruit was packed with amino acids, vitamins, healthy fats, plant compounds like flavonoids, and even some rare minerals. One interesting finding was that the green variety of ice apple had more amino acids than the black one.
