The 65th National Film Awards turned into a heartfelt tribute as Janhvi Kapoor, Khushi Kapoor, and Boney Kapoor accepted late Sridevi’s Best Actress award for her performance in Mom.
Clad in a white and gold saree once worn by her mother, Janhvi stood alongside her family as President Ram Nath Kovind presented the honour, making the moment both proud and poignant.
The honour, presented by President Ram Nath Kovind at Vigyan Bhavan, was for Sridevi’s powerful performance in the 2017 film Mom.
The occasion was made even more poignant by the fact that it came just two months after the legendary actress’s sudden demise on February 24, 2018, due to accidental drowning in Dubai.
Mom, which released in July 2017, marked Sridevi’s return to the big screen after a five-year gap since English Vinglish. While the film was a modest performer at the box office, critics hailed her portrayal of a determined mother seeking justice for her daughter as one of her most nuanced and compelling acts.

The award was presented in the presence of Smriti Irani, then Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Textiles. Following the ceremony, the Kapoor family released a heartfelt joint statement: “We are overjoyed to know that the Jury has conferred the Best Actor Award to Sridevi for her performance in MOM. It’s a very special moment for all of us. She was always a perfectionist… not just a Super Actor but a Super Wife and a Super Mom. She is not with us today, but her legacy will always live on.”
This moment served as both a tribute and a celebration of a career that spanned over 300 films across multiple languages, cementing Sridevi’s place as one of India’s most iconic performers. Her absence was deeply felt, but the recognition underscored that her artistry and spirit would continue to inspire generations.
