Paramount Global has announced that five of MTV’s remaining music channels will be permanently shut down across the UK, Europe, and several international markets by December 31, 2025. This marks the symbolic end of the network’s original identity.

The channels set to go dark include MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live. While the flagship MTV (HD) will continue, its focus will now rest primarily on reality television and lifestyle shows rather than music programming.

According to Paramount’s global restructuring plan, the decision is part of a broader cost-cutting strategy aimed at saving around $500 million worldwide. The company intends to channel resources into its streaming ventures such as Paramount+ and Pluto TV. According to reports, media analysts say this shift represents MTV’s reinvention for a “streaming-first era,” even if it means leaving behind its music roots.

After the UK and European networks, the closures are expected to extend to Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East in 2026. MTV Live’s international feed is already scheduled to cease operations globally by the end of the year.
