Historical Roots
Heera Mandi, the setting for the series, is based in Lahore's famed red-light district. Heeramandi was established by Hira Singh Dogra, who was the prime minister of the Sikh Kingdom of Lahore from September 17, 1843, to December 21, 1844. He was the son of Dhian Singh Dogra, a trusted general of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Wanting to help the local economy, Hira Singh set up a grain market called 'Heera Singh Di Mandi' in the Shahi Mohalla, an area close to the royal court and known for housing the tawaifs (courtesans) of the Walled City of Lahore. After the grain market was established, it turned the area into an economic center, and the tawaif quarters in Heeramandi became more popular.
Cultural Hub
In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Mughals began bringing women from countries like Afghanistan and Uzbekistan to perform classical Indian dances such as Kathak. Over time, Heera Mandi evolved into a renowned centre for tawaifs.
Shift in Identity
Following invasions by Ahmad Shah Abdali, Heera Mandi became known for prostitution. Despite its notorious reputation, the area functions as a regular market during the day, selling food and musical instruments, among other items. However, at night, it transforms back into a hub for the sex trade.
Current Status
Heera Mandi still exists today. By day, it appears as any other market, bustling with the sale of everyday goods. But at night, it changes as brothels open their doors.
Bhansali's Touch
The series is expected to showcase Bhansali’s typical flair for elaborate sets and detailed costumes. Set during the Indian freedom struggle of the 1940s, 'Heeramandi' promises a mix of love, power, revenge, and the quest for freedom.
