What Sparked the Legal Fight
Sunjay Kapur, a well-known businessman, passed away on June 12, 2025, after suffering a heart attack during a polo match in London. Barely a month later, on July 13, his third wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, was appointed as the Managing Director of AIPL, the family company. Then, on July 30, news of a will dated March 21, 2025, surfaced. This document, according to Priya, left Sunjay’s entire personal estate to her alone, excluding not just his children Samaira and Kiaan (from his marriage with Karisma Kapoor) but also his mother, Rani Kapur.
This revelation set off alarm bells in the Kapoor family. On September 8, Samaira and Kiaan, represented by their mother Karisma and backed by grandmother Rani Kapur, filed a petition in the Delhi High Court to challenge the will. They allege that the document is fraudulent, fabricated, and surrounded by highly suspicious circumstances. The court has since ordered Priya to disclose the full extent of Sunjay’s movable and immovable assets.
Allegations of Forgery and Manipulation
Karisma Kapoor, stepping in to protect her children’s rights, has claimed that Samaira and Kiaan were wrongfully excluded from their father’s estate. The children allege that their stepmother, Priya Sachdev, manipulated and possibly forged Sunjay’s will in an attempt to seize complete control of his wealth and properties.
Their plea before the court stated:
“The purported will allegedly executed by the plaintiffs’ father is not a legal and valid document. It is forged and fabricated and in any event surrounded by suspicious circumstances. Neither the original of the alleged purported will has been shown to the plaintiffs nor has a copy of it been provided.”
This argument points to one of the most glaring red flags: the absence of any verifiable document shown to the family. Instead, Priya has remained the sole person claiming the will’s existence.
Rani Kapur’s Shock and Claims
Adding another explosive layer to the fight is the stand taken by Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur. Through her lawyer, Senior Advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, she told the court that she too has been unfairly excluded from her son’s estate. Rani alleged that she has repeatedly asked for details about the will but received no information.
In her words via counsel:
“I have written at least 15 emails asking about the will, what are the documents? Not a word has been shared. I have been told that my emails have been compromised. There is something incredibly unholy. ₹10,000 crore worth of assets should have been mine. I am 80 years old.”
Rani’s claim that assets worth ₹10,000 crore rightfully belong to her highlights just how tangled the financial stakes are, with not only the children but also Sunjay’s own mother contesting Priya’s claim.
The Heart of the Dispute
At the centre of the storm lies the contested will, dated March 21, 2025. If deemed valid, it hands over all of Sunjay Kapur’s personal estate to Priya Sachdev Kapur. If deemed forged or invalid, then the estate may be distributed to his legal heirs—most importantly, his children and his mother.
The timing of the will has raised eyebrows. Sunjay passed away less than three months after its signing, leaving family members to question whether he was in full control of his decisions or if external influence played a role. That Priya became MD of the family company almost immediately after his death adds to suspicions.
