Renowned Tamil-Telugu singer Kalpana Raghavendar was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday after she lost consciousness due to an overdose of 18 sleeping pills at her home in Hyderabad. Initially suspected to be a suicide attempt, the singer later clarified that it was an accidental overdose resulting from insomnia and stress following a disagreement with her daughter.
According to reports, Kalpana fell unconscious at her residence, prompting her husband to raise an alarm when he was unable to reach her over the phone. Members of the Colony Welfare Association informed the police, who entered the house through the kitchen door after receiving no response. They found the singer in an unconscious state and immediately shifted her to the hospital.
Doctors confirmed that her condition is now stable and that she is under medical supervision.
After regaining consciousness, Kalpana provided her statement to the police, denying allegations that she had attempted suicide. She explained that she had taken the sleeping pills due to difficulty sleeping, exacerbated by emotional stress.
“I did not attempt suicide. I was struggling to sleep and took an excessive dose of sleeping pills,” she clarified.
She also admitted to a disagreement with her daughter, which added to her stress. According to police sources, the conflict arose when Kalpana’s daughter refused to move to Hyderabad for her studies, despite her mother’s insistence.
Kalpana revealed that she had traveled to Hyderabad from Ernakulam on March 4. Due to insomnia, she initially took eight sleeping pills, but when she still couldn’t fall asleep, she consumed 10 more, leading to her loss of consciousness.
Her husband, growing concerned when she did not respond to his calls, contacted members of their residential society, who, in turn, alerted the police. The authorities and residents broke into the house and found her unconscious.
Amid speculations, Kalpana’s daughter, Daya Prasad, also spoke to the media, rejecting claims of a suicide attempt.
“This is not a suicide attempt. It was just a slight overdose of prescribed medication due to general life stress. Our family is perfectly fine. My mom will be back in a few days,” she stated.
She further explained that her mother had accidentally taken an excessive dose of sleeping pills prescribed by a doctor to treat her insomnia.
“That’s all I have to say—this was not a suicide attempt, just a slight overdose of insomnia medication prescribed by a doctor,” Daya added.
Doctors treating Kalpana have assured that her condition is now stable, and she is expected to be discharged soon. Meanwhile, the KPHB Police Station is continuing its investigation to verify all aspects of the case. No formal case has been registered against Kalpana, as there is no evidence suggesting an intentional suicide attempt. (Source PTI)
