Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, renowned for his love of good food and drink, found his time in the hospital particularly challenging during his treatment for leukaemia. The strict vegetarian diet policy at the hospital, where he was undergoing treatment, proved to be a significant hurdle for the late actor.
Nutritionist Khyati Rupani, who was responsible for managing his diet during this difficult period, recently shared some insights into Rishi Kapoor’s struggles with the hospital’s food restrictions.
In a conversation with Ronak Kotecha on his YouTube channel, Khyati recalled how Rishi Kapoor, known for his indulgent culinary tastes, was deeply displeased with the limitations placed on his meals. “Mr Rishi Kapoor was somebody who hated his food being restricted, and Mrs Neetu was always saying, ‘Don’t give him this. Why did you give him gulab jamun?’” she revealed.
The hospital's strictly vegetarian menu, which even excluded eggs, was a major source of frustration for the actor. Khyati elaborated on this challenge, saying, “He was a non-vegetarian. Lilavati is a vegetarian hospital… So yes, he was one of the very unhappy clients. I tried everything, but I think he remained irritated throughout.”
Rishi Kapoor’s fondness for rich, non-vegetarian meals was well-known, and his son, actor Ranbir Kapoor, has previously admitted to inheriting his father's love for food.
However, in contrast to Rishi’s indulgent tendencies, Ranbir credited his mother, Neetu Kapoor, for instilling discipline in his eating habits during an appearance at the International Film Festival of India in Goa.
Rishi Kapoor’s battle with leukaemia spanned two years, with the actor passing away on April 30, 2020, at the age of 67. He was first diagnosed with the disease in 2018 and received treatment in New York before returning to India. Sadly, in 2020, due to breathing difficulties and a recurrence of leukaemia, he was hospitalised again, where he eventually passed.
His untimely death left the industry and his loved ones in shock.
