It was recently rumoured that two iconic figures in Indian cinema, Superstar Rajinikanth and legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam, would reunite for a project after 33 years.
The excitement among fans was palpable, as the duo had previously collaborated on the 1991 film “Thalapathi,” a movie that continues to hold a special place in the hearts of Tamil cinema lovers. “Thalapathi” was a resounding success and featured Malayalam superstar Mammootty alongside Rajinikanth, with the film’s narrative inspired by the Mahabharata characters Karna and Duryodhana. Given the stature of both Rajinikanth and Mani Ratnam, rumors about their potential reunion quickly gained traction.
However, actor Suhasini Mani Ratnam, the wife of Mani Ratnam, recently provided a reality check on these rumors. Speaking to News18, she dismissed the speculation and humorously remarked that neither Rajinikanth nor Mani Ratnam were aware of any such collaboration. According to her, the rumors were entirely unfounded and were being spread only by people writing about them, with no basis in reality.
Earlier reports had claimed that both Rajinikanth and Mani Ratnam were in talks for a new film, fueling speculation about a long-awaited collaboration. This news naturally thrilled fans, especially as it had been over three decades since the two had worked together. Their previous collaboration in “Thalapathi” set a high bar, and the thought of these two industry stalwarts joining forces once again stirred significant excitement.
However, Suhasini’s clarification suggests that, for now, there is no imminent reunion between the two. This does not mean that the idea has been completely ruled out, but it appears that any such collaboration would be far from official at this stage.
Meanwhile, Rajinikanth continues to be active on the work front. He is currently working on director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s upcoming film “Coolie,” which is slated for a 2025 release. Simultaneously, Mani Ratnam is busy with his project “Thug Life,” which stars Kamal Haasan and is also expected to hit theaters in the summer of 2025.
Though fans may be disappointed that a Rajinikanth-Mani Ratnam film is not happening soon, both icons are involved in other exciting ventures, ensuring that the wait for more of their magic on screen will continue.
