Renowned actor Pankaj Tripathi has responded to the inevitable comparisons made between his performance in Metro....In Dino and that of the late Irrfan Khan in Life in a...Movie (2007).
The new movie, which is widely considered to be a spiritual continuation of Anurag Basu's 2007 anthology, re-explores themes of love, loneliness, and urban isolation, but it does so with stories from a new generation and from a different point of view.
Irrfan Khan played the endearing but emotionally complex character of Monty in the original, a man enmeshed in the complexities of contemporary relationships.
One of the film's most poignant moments was his collaboration with Konkona Sensharma. After almost twenty years, Konkana Sensharma and Pankaj Tripathi are reunited in Metro...In Dino, but this time they are middle-aged and dealing with the fatigue and longing of a midlife crisis.
The tone and character similarities have, of course, been noticed by viewers and critics, especially in light of Tripathi's own subtle comedic timing and emotional depth, which also characterised Khan's on-screen persona. Pankaj, however, has decisively refuted any idea of competition or analogy.
In a candid interview with Zoom, he said, “Yeh comparison bilkul nahi hona chahiye. Voh mere senior the aur main unka fan rahunga. Mere drama school ke senior the voh. Hum ek hi acting institute se seekhe hai. Main khud unke craft ko dekhke seekhta tha. Voh Irrfan sir hai, unki jagah hum sabke dilon mein hai.”
(Such comparison should never happen. He was my senior and I will always be his fan. We passed out of the same drama school; I learnt so much just by observing his craft. He is Irrfan sir and will always have a place in our hearts.)

Metro, once again directed by Anurag Basu, Neena Gupta, Anupam Kher, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Ali Fazal are among the amazing cast members that In Dino features. The film has received praise for its reflective narrative and moving portrayal of contemporary love, and it features music by long-time collaborator Pritam.
