Noted director Ram Gopal Varma had created quite a controversy after he claimed that it was singer Sukhwinder Singh who created the Grammy award winning song ‘Jai Ho’ from ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and not music maestro AR Rahman.
Now, singer Sukhwinder Singh who sang the popular and award-winning number has denied all such claims and he told Hindustan Times that he had only sung the song and that it was in fact composed by Rahman only.
“AR Rahman has composed the song, I have only sung it. Ram Gopal Varma ji koi chhoti hasti toh nahi hain, shayad unhe kuchh galat pata chala hoga. Gulzar saheb had written this song, Rahman liked it. Then he composed it in my studio in Juhu, Mumbai. He made Subhash ji listen to it. I had not sung the song till that point of time,” he told the site.
In an interview with Film Companion, director Ram Gopal Varma had revealed a few details about ‘Jai Ho' and how it was initially composed for Subhash Ghai's 2008 film 'Yuvvraaj'. But since it didn't fit into his film's soundtrack, Ghai rejected it and then AR Rahman used it for the 2008 Oscar winning movie 'Slumdog Millionaire', which had Dev Patel and Freida Pinto in it.
But Ram Gopal Varma further claimed that Rahman was busy in London and he asked Sukhwinder to compose the song as Ghai was waiting for him.
When Subhash Ghai came to know that it wasn't Rahman, but Sukhwinder who had composed the tune, he got angry at the music director. "Subhash Ghai blew up the thing, he told Rahman, ‘I am paying you crores of rupees as my music director and you are making Sukhwinder make a tune for me. You have the guts to say that in front of me? If I want Sukhwinder, I’ll sign him, who are you to take my money and make Sukhwinder do the music for me?’”
AR Rahman won a Grammy and Oscars award, among others, for ‘Jai Ho’, a hit song from the Oscar award winning movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’
