Since its debut, NewJeans has garnered positive attention for its
distinctive concept and music, both domestically in South Korea and on
the international stage. However, behind the scenes, the journey
hasn't been without its challenges.
In a revealing interview, Min Hee Jin, the creative director of
NewJeans and CEO of their label ADOR, disclosed that the group's
highly anticipated debut track 'Attention' initially failed to receive
positive feedback internally.
Min Hee Jin explained that she deliberately opted for songs that
diverged from the typical K-pop sound to set NewJeans apart and pique
curiosity among listeners. However, during the song selection process
for NewJeans' debut, tensions arose between her and HYBE label
representatives.
During the song's listening session, some HYBE representatives
expressed reservations about 'Attention', deeming it flat and
disliking its unconventional sound style. There were also concerns
voiced that NewJeans might struggle to make it big since they didn't
fit the traditional K-pop mold.
Initially, Min Hee Jin admitted feeling anxious about whether her
choice would resonate with the public. However, she ultimately
realised the impossibility of pleasing every listener and remained
steadfast in her decision-making process.
"In the end, I didn’t care," Min Hee Jin remarked. "Because I had a
clear goal and I was confident in the song I selected."
Netizens lauded Min Hee Jin for her determination in sticking to her
decision to introduce NewJeans with a "non-K-pop" sound, ultimately
benefiting the group's trajectory. Her unwavering confidence and
vision have proven instrumental in shaping NewJeans' identity and
setting them apart in the competitive landscape of the music industry.
Earlier, reports suggested that HYBE has been making efforts to
contact the parents of the members of NewJeans, especially after the
release of their new single 'Bubble Gum', a move that raised eyebrows
and sparked speculation within the K-pop community and beyond. The
situation gained traction after ADOR's CEO, Min Hee Jin, responded
assertively to HYBE's alleged attempts to reach out to the parents of
NewJeans members. Min Hee Jin's camp voiced discontent regarding
HYBE's efforts to contact the parents of the group members. They
claimed that despite HYBE's attempts, the parents have not been
responsive to their calls.
