Austin Butler almost got into a major motorcycle accident while filming for ‘The Bikeriders.’
Butler opened up about the experience during the movie's Los Angeles premiere on Monday, June 17. He revealed that he had an accident on set.
“We were doing a night shoot and hit a patch of wet leaves and I went down, but I thankfully landed on my feet,” the ‘Elvis’ star revealed.
“All I was thinking about was the bike, though. I just wanted to make sure that it was okay. I should have been more scared on a motorcycle probably. It wasn’t until I crashed, that I realised that it was possible. That then gave me a healthy respect,” the actor added.
Despite the accident, Butler revealed that making ‘The Bikeriders’ made him closer to his father by their shared love of motorcycles.
“My dad rode motorcycles, so I think... It's been cool to get to talk about my dad a lot recently because he gave me that first love of motorcycles," says Butler.
He added that he “can't wait” for his father David Butler to see the movie and that his father “supported” the bike racing in the film.
Staying true to the events, director Jeff Nichols revealed that no one wore helmets, “There’s no CGI. There’s no filter. We put up a camera and lens and they got up on the bikes and rode them. But, yeah, I was terrified. I mean you take all the safety precautions that you can and you have stunt coordinator Jeff Milburn, who is a motorcycle guru. But at some point, it’s a 60-year-old machine and you’re spinning with speed and you have a famous person with no helmet on,” Nichols explained.
‘The Bikeriders’ follows Benny (Butler) , a member of a motorcycle gang in the 1960s and its leader (Hardy). Benny’s girlfriend is played by Jodie Comer who wants Benny to leave the world of gangs and violence behind him. The film is based on a book of the same name authored by Danny Lyon, who is portrayed by Mike Faist in the movie, about the ‘Outlaws MC,’ an Illinois motorcycle club.
'The Bikeriders' will release on 21 June.
