A heartbreaking new development has surfaced about the death of One Direction’s Liam Payne, who passed away on October 16. While initial reports suggested he fell from his hotel balcony in Argentina, a new statement from the Buenos Aires Security Ministry has confirmed that Liam Payne “jumped from the balcony of his room.”
Pablo Policicchio, the communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, told the Associated Press (AP) that Liam Payne “jumped from the balcony” of his third-floor room at Casa Sur Hotel, located in the Palermo area of Buenos Aires. Police responded to an emergency call placed just after 5 PM local time.
Authorities had been alerted to the presence of an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.” The Buenos Aires police confirmed Liam Payne had “extremely serious injuries,” and medics reported that the singer died on the spot.
AP also obtained the 911 call, in which the hotel manager is heard saying, “A guest who is overwhelmed with drugs and alcohol… He’s destroying the entire room and, well, we need you to send someone, please.” An autopsy is currently being conducted.
Earlier in the day, TMZ reported that Liam Payne had been behaving “erratically” at the hotel, including smashing his laptop and needing to be escorted back to his room.
Liam Payne had been open about his struggles with alcohol. During a 2021 interview on The Diary of a CEO podcast, he candidly addressed his battle with addiction and suicidal thoughts, saying, “There is some stuff that I have definitely never, never spoken about. It was really, really, really severe. And it was a problem. And it was only until I saw myself after that, I was like ‘Right, I need to fix myself.’”
“I was all bloated out… I call it my pills-and-booze face. My face was just like 10 times more than it is now. I just didn’t like myself very much and then I made a change,” he added.
Fans of Liam Payne and One Direction have been left in mourning, though his former bandmates have yet to comment on his untimely demise.
