Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has come out strongly in support of Malayalam cinema stalwarts Mohanlal and Mammootty after a recent controversy over a religious gesture made headlines. The issue began when Mohanlal performed a puja at the Sabarimala temple on March 18 for his longtime friend Mammootty.
While the gesture was seen by many as an act of love and friendship, it sparked criticism from a section of people citing religious insensitivity.
Javed Akhtar, known for his outspoken views, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to defend the actors and slam those questioning the gesture. In his post, he wrote, “I wish every Mamooty of India had a friend like Mohan Lal and every Mohan Lal had a friend like Mamooty. It is obvious that their great friendship is beyond the understanding of some small, narrow-minded, petty and negative people but who cares.”
The controversy erupted after a leaked receipt from the Sabarimala temple indicated that Mohanlal had performed the ‘usha puja’ for Mammootty. The receipt reportedly carried Mammootty’s original name, Mohammed Kutty, along with his birth details. This triggered criticism from certain quarters, especially from political analyst and journalist O Abdullah, who said that Mohanlal’s act was a violation of Islamic beliefs.
Quoting religious texts, Abdullah said in an audio message, “According to Islamic beliefs, no one should offer anything to anyone except Allah. This is a violation.” He went on to add, “If it was with Mammootty’s knowledge, he [Mammootty] should seek forgiveness. He should apologise to the Muslim community.” Abdullah further claimed that if the puja had been done with Mammootty’s consent, then it would be considered a “great crime” under Islamic law.
Javed Akhtar called out the “narrow-minded” and “petty” people creating division and controversy over what was essentially a heartfelt gesture. His post received widespread support and was seen as a voice of reason.

At a public event in Chennai, Mohanlal addressed the issue and defended his actions. “What is wrong in praying for a friend?” he asked, adding that he considered Mammootty his brother. Mohanlal also shared an update on Mammootty’s health: “He is doing well. He had a minor health issue, but that’s normal for everyone. There is nothing to worry about.”
Meanwhile, rumours were swirling on social media that Mammootty was suffering from cancer. These claims were quickly dismissed by Mammootty’s team, who clarified that the actor was simply on vacation. They also confirmed that he would soon resume shooting for a film directed by Mahesh Narayanan, in which he stars alongside Mohanlal.
The entire episode has sparked a debate around interfaith interactions, religious boundaries, and public perception. While some criticized Mohanlal for performing a Hindu ritual on behalf of a Muslim friend, many others, including Javed Akhtar, praised the actors’ bond and viewed the puja as a touching symbol of their deep connection.
This incident also raises larger questions about how religious identities are interpreted in the public domain. In a country as diverse as India, such controversies often gain traction, especially when celebrities are involved. However, voices like Javed Akhtar's remind us of the importance of compassion, understanding, and above all, friendship that transcends barriers.
As Javed Akhtar rightly pointed out, “It is obvious that their great friendship is beyond the understanding of some small, narrow-minded, petty and negative people.” At a time when divisions are easily amplified, this story—despite the controversy—stands as a reminder of the powerful bond between two of Indian cinema’s greatest legends.
