Actor Brad Pitt has sued his ex-wife Angelina Jolie for $35 million in damages as part of their ongoing fight over their French winery, Château Miraval. According to new court filings dated October 29, Pitt’s legal team submitted several emails exchanged between Jolie’s representatives and his own regarding her 2021 sale of her share of the winery.
For those unaware, Pitt first filed the lawsuit in November 2022, claiming that Jolie sold her stake in Château Miraval to a third party without his consent. He said this violated their earlier agreement that neither of them would sell their interests without the other’s approval. Jolie, however, maintained that she did not need his permission to sell her share.
In one of the court exhibits, a November 2023 email, Jolie’s lawyers addressed the lawsuit and Pitt’s demand for millions in damages. They wrote, “The burdensome nature of any production is a matter of Mr. Pitt’s own creation — he is suing Ms. Jolie for $35 million in damages. As a result, he has to incur the expense of producing the documents that will show (or not show) those damages.”
Another email from October 2023 referenced Pitt’s claim that Miraval’s operations were harmed and that he was “seeking ongoing damages for alleged harm to the winery’s business.” US Weekly reported that Jolie’s emails were recently presented in court as part of Pitt’s efforts to access more documents that he believes could strengthen his case. Jolie’s side has argued that some of the emails are privileged communications involving legal strategy and should not be disclosed.
Additionally, Jolie's attorneys sent a letter to Pitt's team on November 22, 2023, reiterating that Pitt was obligated to provide financial documentation to support his damages claim because he started the $35 million lawsuit.
In his filing, Pitt stated that he spent years and significant resources transforming Miraval into a thriving business. He alleged that Jolie sold her share to the beverage company Stoli, which he claims then tried to stage a “hostile takeover” of the winery. Pitt said he had previously offered Jolie $55 million for her share, but she withdrew from negotiations and sold to Stoli instead.
Jolie said she backed out because Pitt wanted her to sign a non-disclosure agreement that would have prevented her from speaking about both the sale and their personal life. Her legal team accused Pitt of trying to silence her and “cover up” his alleged abusive behaviour during a 2016 private jet incident, where he was reportedly verbally and physically abusive toward her and their children.
Pitt and Jolie, who share six children — Maddox (24), Pax (21), Zahara (20), Shiloh (19), and twins Vivienne and Knox (17) — separated in 2016 after 12 years together and two years of marriage. Following a long and bitter legal process, their divorce was finalized in December 2024.
