Producer Harvey Weinstein, a central figure in the 2018 #MeToo movement, has been diagnosed with cancer.

As reported by NBC News, Harvey Weinstein has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia and is currently receiving treatment while incarcerated at Rikers Island in New York. Chronic myeloid leukemia is a rare type of bone marrow cancer, according to the Mayo Clinic. This diagnosis follows Weinstein's recent emergency heart surgery last month, as well as his positive tests for COVID-19 and double pneumonia in July.

The 72-year-old producer is currently held at Rikers Island, awaiting a retrial in November after his 2020 rape conviction in New York was overturned in April, along with his 23-year sentence. Last month, he was also indicted on additional sexual assault charges in New York. He has pleaded not guilty and is now facing two indictments for three counts of sex crimes.

Harvey, who has denied any non-consensual sexual encounters, was convicted of rape in February 2020 in a case that significantly fueled the #MeToo movement. However, the New York Court of Appeals overturned the conviction in April, ruling that he did not receive a fair trial because a judge improperly permitted testimony from accusers with whom he had not been formally charged with assault.
