Sanjay Leela Bhansali recently turned 62 years old, and on his special day, delved into his iconic career. He was born on February 24, 1963, into a Gujarati Jain family in Bhuleshwar, South Bombay. He has grown up in a family of music lovers and cinema. His father was a producer but several failed projects led the Bhansali family to struggle financially. They initially lived in a small room in a chawl. Bhansali’s mother came forward as the breadwinner of the family.
However, Bhansali followed in his father’s footsteps and entered the world of cinema. However, he initially faced multiple rejections eventually becoming one of the most celebrated filmmakers in the industry. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s breakthrough was the 1996 film Khamoshi: The Musical The film was not a commercial success but it helped him to gain recognition.
However, Sanjay Leela Bhansali soon started ruling the hearts of Indians with his 1999 film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam starring Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The film received critical acclamation and helped him to gain fame as a filmmaker. His film Devdas received worldwide success when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002. It was also nominated for the British Academy of Film and Television Award for Best Film Not in English.

The filmmakers' films received 38 awards and accolades, including several National Film Awards, Filmfare, Mirchi Music Awards, Screen Awards, IIFA Awards, Zee Cine Awards, and Zee Gold Awards. Additionally, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has also received the Padma Shri award in 2015 for his contribution to Indian cinema.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's recent works include Padmaavat, Gangubai Kathiawadi and the drama series Heeramandi. He is currently busy making his new projects Inshallah and Love and War. He has kept most of the details of both projects under wraps. However, Love and War will star Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal, and is currently scheduled for release in March 2026.
