During the CNBC TV18 Global Leadership Summit held on November 7, Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone recalled her first interaction with the celebrity fashion designer Sabyasachi.
The actress shared that she remembered the first time she walked for Sabyasachi, and shared that it was one of the events in Delhi. The actress recalled that it was a very different Sabyasachi than he is today, later correcting, “he has evolved.”
She added, “Even today, if I think back on that work on that show, I still see Sabyasachi in it, but I never forget, it was basically this sleek pulled back. braid going at the back, and all of us models have to take a black sketch pen or like a marker and draw marks in our teeth to make it look like we were buckteeth and big reading glasses. That was the very first time I walked for him.”
She continued recalling, “Even back then, I just remember that this designer was very, very special.” The actress further revealed that she bought a saree from that collection that she still owns.
Sabyasachi also revealed that he remembers the show, which was called “The Nair Sisters.”
However, he also showered praise on Deepika and said, “I think Deepika truly is India's biggest cultural ambassador. Everyone from all over the world knows who she is. She is bringing the world to India.”
He added, “Deepika started with fashion. And I've always said that if I wanted to put somebody on the runway, it has to be somebody who has a fashion background as well. But more than that, I think there is no stronger cultural ambassador of the country than Deepika. It was an honour to have her on the show.”
