Veteran actor Prem Chopra, a cherished figure in Indian cinema, was admitted to Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital on Saturday, November 8, after experiencing chest congestion.
At 89, the actor has been closely monitored over the past few days and, thankfully, is recovering well. His family has reassured fans that he is likely to be discharged in the next three to four days.
Speaking to India Today, his son-in-law, actor Vikas Bhalla, emphasised that the hospitalisation was simply a precautionary step. “It’s all age-related, and a regular procedure. There is nothing to worry about,” he said, offering comfort to the many admirers keeping Prem Chopra in their thoughts.
Prem Chopra’s journey in films spans over six decades, making him one of the most recognisable faces in Indian cinema.
He began his career in Punjabi cinema with the National Award-winning Chaudhary Karnail Singh in 1960, before quickly transitioning to Hindi films.
His unique style, dialogue delivery, and screen presence soon earned him widespread recognition, particularly in the memorable villainous roles he became famous for.
His most notable role as a main antagonist spanned 1967 to 1995.
During that time, he immortalised his on-screen persona with the famous line, "Prem naam hai mera, Prem Chopra," from Raj Kapoor's hit film "Bobby" (1973).
