Renowned actress Neetu Chandra has taken a firm stand against vulgarity in music by filing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Patna High Court, targeting singer Yo Yo Honey Singh’s latest chartbuster, Maniac.
The PIL, expected to be heard later this month, not only names Honey Singh but also includes those involved in the song’s creation, such as lyricist Leo Grewal and Bhojpuri singers Ragini Vishwakarma and Arjun Ajanabi.
Beyond addressing Maniac, Chandra’s petition seeks a complete ban on obscene Bhojpuri and Hindi songs, arguing that such content negatively impacts society, especially young girls. She expressed concerns that the lyrics in these songs contribute to an unsafe environment for school-going girls and called for legal action against artists promoting vulgarity. In her plea, Chandra emphasized that such music could hinder societal progress and diminish respect for women, urging stricter regulations to curb the trend.
In her petition, Neetu Chandra, the Patna-born actress known for her work in Bollywood and for producing critically acclaimed Bhojpuri and Maithili films, has urged the court to direct the respondents to "amend the lyrics" of Maniac.
Chandra has strongly criticized the song, arguing that it "portrays overt sexualization," reducing women to mere "sex objects." She further alleged that it misuses the Bhojpuri language to "normalize vulgarity," which, in her view, undermines the essence of women’s empowerment. Through her legal action, she seeks accountability from artists and the industry, emphasizing the need for more responsible content that respects cultural and social values.
Speaking to India TV, Neetu said, "Vulgar Bhojpuri and Hindi songs are not leaving the girls and women going to school and college in Bihar and they are forced to walk on the road with their eyes down. Due to these songs, women do not even like to watch TV at home. Many singers singing such songs have gained fame today, which can become an obstacle in the development of society and country."
Neetu Chandra has also urged the people of Bihar to take a firm stand against such songs, emphasizing the need to oppose content that promotes vulgarity. She asserted that legal action should be taken against singers who produce such music.
The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been officially filed in the Patna High Court, with Senior Advocate Nivedita Nirvikar leading the case. Chandra hopes this legal step will bring about stricter regulations on lyrical content and ensure a more respectful representation of women in music.
