After winning the North and heartland, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has set sights on South India with Kerala first in focus. In the run-up to Lok Sabha polls Prime Minister Narendra Modi also lined up three trips to the state.

What brings Kerala to the forefront of the BJP blueprint for South? The party has prioritised atleast four Lok Sabha seats in the state, where it had performed better in the past elections with a rise in vote share, though it could never win a parliamentary seat in Kerala.

The party has made a detailed plan for leaders, including union ministers, with rallies, meetings across the state with the central schemes in focus.

Meanwhile, Kerala is also one of the states where Congress still has a massive presence. The state sends 20 parliamentarians and during the 2019 general elections, the grand old party had registered victory on 15 seats with a vote-share of 37.5 percent, while BJP couldn’t win a seat but received a vote-share of 13 percent in the state. CPI(M) had fielded its candidate from 14 seats, but managed to win one seat and party’s over all voter-share was 26 percent.
