Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, has a rich history as the center of the Jharkhand movement, which advocated for a separate state for the tribal areas of South Bihar, Northern Odisha, Western West Bengal, and the eastern region of present-day Chhattisgarh. This movement eventually led to the formation of the Jharkhand state in 2000.

Ranchi is one of the key Lok Sabha constituencies in Jharkhand, often witnessing a tough competition between the Congress and the BJP. The constituency comprises six assembly segments: Ichchhagarh, Silli, Khijri, Ranchi, Hatia, and Kanke. The Kanke assembly seat is reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Khijri for Scheduled Tribes (ST).
