Champai Soren replaced JMM chief Hemant Soren as the chief minister after the latter's arrest in a money laundering case. Though JMM managed to retain its grip on power, the political upheaval has paved the way for an interesting clash between the JMM and opposition BJP.

In 2019, the BJP-led alliance won 12 out of the 14 seats in the state while the Congress-led UPA won just 2. The BJP contested in alliance with All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) while the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) was part of a broader alliance with Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress. The BJP, which had won 12 out of 14 seats even in the previous Lok Sabha elections in 2014, faced tough competition from the opposition alliance, which sought to capitalize on issues like unemployment, agrarian distress, and concerns related to tribal welfare and identity.
