The Indian National Congress (INC) wrestled back the key Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat in Punjab after former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi defeated BJP’s Sushil Kumar Rinku with a margin of 1,75,993 votes.
Channi got 3,90,053 votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha election results. He was followed by BJP’s Rinku who polled 2,14,060 votes. Pawan Kumar Tinu of the Aam Aadmi Party came in next with votes totalling 2,08,889 and Mohinder Singh Kaypee of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) was next with 67,911 votes.
In a post on social media platform, X, Channi wrote, “I thank the people of Jalandhar from the bottom of my heart for this historic victory.”
Jalandhar was an important urban centre in Punjab, known for its educational institutions, sports culture, and industrial development. It's also a key constituency in Punjab politics.
Here are the latest trends from the Jalandhar Lok Sabha contest:
1. Indian National Congress' Charanjit Singh Channi was leading Bharatiya Janata Party's Sushil Kumar Rinku by 54,988 votes as of 10.30 AM.
2. Charanjit Singh Channi extended his lead over BJP’s Sushil Kumar Rinku to more than 1 lakh votes, showed trends as of 11.45 AM.
3. The Indian National Congress’ (INC) Channi was leading with 3,84,280 votes. He was followed by BJP’s Rinku with 2,12,190 votes.
4. The Indian National Congress’ (INC) Channi got 3,90,053 votes. He was followed by BJP’s Rinku who polled 2,14,060 votes.

About Jalandhar seat
Santokh Singh Chaudhary of Indian National Congress (INC) had won the Jalandhar Lok Sabha in 2019. However, in the 2023 by-elections, Congress’ Karamjit Kaur was defeated by Congress MLA-turned-Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Sushil Rinku.
In 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Rinku contested from the Scheduled Caste candidates-reserved seat as a BJP candidate.
Further, Pawan Kumar Tinu, who was earlier with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) contested elections on AAP ticket for Jalandhar, while Mohinder Singh Kaypee, who was earlier with Congress is fighting elections with SAD in 2024.
There was a four-way battle in Punjab as allies at the Centre from both ruling and opposition factions fought independently on all the 13 Lok Sabha seats.
Jalandhar is among the few seats in Punjab with influencing factors like high dalit population and Hindu Voters factor. The other two seats being Bathinda and Hoshiarpur.
The Jalandhar constituency, with around 16.5 lakh eligible voters, hosts around 37 percent of its population belonging to the scheduled caste. This Lok Sabha area encompasses nine assembly segments: Phillaur (SC), Nakodar, Shahkot, Kartarpur (SC), Jalandhar West (SC), Jalandhar Central, Jalandhar North, Jalandhar Cantt, and Adampur (SC).
