Polling for the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections in Guna, Madhya Pradesh, has seen a 68.93 % voter turnout in six hours, and in 2019 it was 70.32 % voter. Guna is one of the biggest Lok Sabha constituencies in Madhya Pradesh with eight assembly segments – Shivpuri, Pichhore, Kolaras, Bamori, Guna, Ashoknagar, Chanderi and Mungaoli. The BJP won five of these in the recently concluded assembly polls.
The key contest here for the Lok Sabha elections due on May 7 will be between Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Jyotiraditya Scindia and Congress' Rao Yadvendra Singh Yadav.
Jyotiraditya Scindia is the son of the late politician Madhavrao Scindia. Before joining the BJP, Scindia served as the Minister of State for Power and Corporate from 2012 to 2014 in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. Scindia served as a Union Minister in the Congress party before joining the BJP in 2020.
Meanwhile, Rao Yadvendra Singh Yadav is a BJP worker who joined the Congress before the 2023 assembly election and lost. His late father, Deshraj Singh Yadav, was a Member of Legislative Assembly from the BJP who had taken on Scindia.
BJP candidate Krishna Pal Singh emerged victorious in the 2019 General Election, securing a significant victory margin against Scindia who was then with the Congress party.
In 2014, however, Scindia had defeated his nearest rival BJP’s Jaibhansingh Pawaiya by more than 1 lakh votes.
The Scindia family has retained the Guna seat on 14 occasions out of 18 elections held here, regardless of party affiliations. Vijayaraje Scindia contested and won her first election in 1957 on a Congress ticket. She resigned and fought as an independent candidate in 1967 and still won.
She contested on a BJP ticket between 1989 and 1998 and won.
Her son Madhavrao Scindia was also a nine-time Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from the Guna/Gwalior seats. He contested his first election on a Bharatiya Jana Sangh ticket from Guna in 1971. In 1980 he joined the Congress party and won the Guna seat for the third consecutive term.
