Delhi heavy rain: What IMD advises during severe weather conditions

Delhi-NCR witnessed gusty winds and strong thunderstorms in the early hours of Friday. Several flights were diverted and delayed and traffic congestion was reported in the national capital and the surrounding areas.

Delhi and its surrounding regions witnessed heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds in the early hours of Friday. Several places experienced traffic congestion and waterlogging. Several flights were delayed and diverted from Delhi and airlines issued an advisory for the travellers.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) also issued an advisory for the people of Delhi, asking them to exercise caution and to avoid travel if possible.

IMD urged people to look out for worsening weather conditions and move to safer places. The advisory said that people should keep windows and doors closed. The weather department said that people should not take shelter under trees as there is a possibility of them breaking.

Further, people have been advised not to lie on concrete floors and not to take support from concrete walls. IMD also said that electrical appliances should be unplugged and people should immediately get out of water bodies.

While listing the impact of the thunderstorms, IMD said uprooting of trees and braking of branches is expected. Major and minor impacts to Papaya trees and Banyan trees are also expected.
