Bengaluru’s Namma Metro is planning to expand its largest proposed corridor by adding a branch line to the upcoming international sports complex in southeastern Bengaluru.
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has completed a feasibility study for a 68-km corridor connecting Kalena Agrahara on Bannerghatta Road to Kadugodi Tree Park near Whitefield. This line will pass through Bannerghatta, Jigani, Attibele, Sarjapur, Dommasandra Circle, and Varthur Kodi, linking several major tech hubs across the city.
Delhi-based Introsoft Solutions Pvt Ltd has prepared the draft feasibility report, covering alignment, traffic demand, land acquisition, cost estimates, number of stations, and ridership projections.
Following the state Cabinet’s approval of a Rs 2,350-crore international sports complex in Surya City Phase 4 at Indlavadi in Anekal taluk, BMRCL has been asked to include a metro link to the venue. The consultant is now conducting additional studies to incorporate this connection.
A senior BMRCL official said a 3.5-4 km spur line is planned to connect the sports complex, expanding the main line from 68 km to 72 km. “This spur will branch off after Jigani towards Anekal. It will allow people coming from Bannerghatta and Anekal to reach the stadium directly. The main line will continue on its original alignment, with dedicated trains for both routes,” the official was quoted by Deccan Herald as saying.
The sports complex will include an 80,000-capacity cricket stadium, facilities for 24 indoor and outdoor sports, and a 30,000-seat auditorium. The Housing Department is tasked with preparing the complex’s detailed project report (DPR).
BMRCL expects to submit its feasibility report for the 72-km line to the state government by the end of October. Once approved, the DPR process will begin, which usually takes about a year and requires clearances from both the state and central government, potentially adding another two years. Construction could begin by 2029 and may take five to ten years to complete.
The corridor will include both underground and elevated stretches and will connect SWIFT City, a 1,000-acre township for startups and workshops in Sarjapur. As the area is still developing, stations will be spaced farther apart, but the line is expected to have over 50 stations.
This corridor is part of a 210.9-km masterplan BMRCL is preparing under the directions of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
The masterplan includes six extensions and two new lines, bringing Bengaluru’s planned metro network to 467.69 km, comparable to Delhi-NCR metro’s planned 467 km.
