The SUV segment has become the volume driver for the passenger vehicle (PV) market in India, contributing nearly 55% to the domestic wholesales. Among the prominent models in this space are the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Tata Punch, Mahindra Scorpio, Kia Seltos, Toyota Fortuner, MG Hector, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun. However, the leader this year, purely in terms of volumes, is none other than the Hyundai Creta.
The Creta is the largest-selling SUV year-to-date (YTD) in the calendar year (CY) 2025 at 84,774 units. It is also the second-best-selling PV, only behind Maruti's WagonR, which has recorded volumes of 88,494 units.
Based in the highly competitive mid-size SUV segment, the Hyundai Creta rivals the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, Tata Curvv, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun and MG Astor.
The SUV is available in both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) avatars.
When it comes to the ICE version, there are three engine options -- 1.5-litre MPi petrol (115 PS and 144 Nm), 1.5-litre Kappa Turbo GDi petrol engine (160 PS and 253 Nm) and 1.5-litre U2 CRDi diesel (116 PS and 250 Nm).
The transmission options include 6-speed MT and IVT automatic with the 1.5-litre MPi petrol engine, 7-speed DCT automatic with the 1.5-litre Kappa Turbo GDi petrol engine, and 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT with the 1.5-litre U2 CRDi diesel engine.
The Creta also has a performance-oriented avatar, the Creta N Line, which employs the 1.5-litre Kappa Turbo GDi petrol engine, having transmission options like 6-speed MT and 7-speed DCT.
The Creta Electric comes with two battery pack options -- 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh. With the smaller battery pack, the SUV has a claimed range of 390 km. The bigger battery pack is good for a range of 473 km (claimed).
The standard Creta is priced between Rs 11.11 lakh and Rs 20.50 lakh, the Creta N Line between Rs 16.93 lakh and Rs 20.64 lakh, and the Creta Electric between Rs 17.99 lakh and Rs 24.38 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom.
Among others, the Creta offers features like a voice-enabled panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, dual-zone automatic temperature control, Bose sound system and Level-2 ADAS.
According to industry experts, the Creta has always garnered handsome volumes due to its value-for-money character. The SUV is feature-loaded, affordable (considering its segment), and offers multiple powertrain options (petrol, turbo petrol, diesel and electric).
