Honda has introduced its latest kei electric car, the Honda N-One e:, as a new urban mobility solution in Japan. This compact, battery-powered hatchback is the Japanese auto major's response to growing demand for efficient, eco-friendly city transport, packaged with a distinctive character that stands out among conventional electric vehicles.
The kei electric cars in Japan are small, battery-powered vehicles built to meet the nation's kei car standards, which limit size and engine output. These electric models are specifically designed for city use, offering quiet performance, easy parking and very low running costs.
The N-One e: continues the recognisable styling cues of the regular N-One, maintaining a retro-inspired silhouette with rounded headlamps and a minimalist front fascia. Its proportions are tailored to Japan's dense urban landscape, allowing for easy manoeuvrability in crowded neighbourhoods and tight parking spots. Despite its compact exterior, Honda has focused on maximising cabin comfort and practicality, ensuring that the N-One e: appeals not just to first-time electric vehicle (EV) buyers but also to long-time fans of the kei segment.
Powering the N-One e: is a front-mounted electric motor, producing around 64PS and 162Nm of torque, mated to a 29.6kWh battery. On a full charge, the car is capable of covering over 270km (WLTP standards), a figure that positions it as one of the more capable electric kei cars in its class. The battery supports both AC and DC charging, enabling faster top-ups when needed; rapid charging can replenish most of the battery within about half an hour at compatible stations.
The interior of the N-One e: is thoughtfully arranged, with straightforward controls and a functional dashboard layout. Buyers can choose from versions with or without a central touchscreen, reflecting Honda's aim to offer both high-tech and no-frills options. Folding rear seats and multiple storage spaces make the N-One e: practical for daily errands or short trips out of town.
A unique highlight is its capability to supply electricity externally, useful for powering small appliances during outages or while camping. This feature, rare in cars of this size, further enhances its appeal in a country accustomed to natural disasters and frequent outdoor activities.
Currently, the N-One e: is available only in Japan, where it benefits from incentives aimed at encouraging EV adoption. While Honda has yet to announce wider international plans, the N-One e: stands as a compelling demonstration of how compact electric vehicles can combine tradition, practicality, and forward-looking technology for modern city life.
In India, Honda currently offers three internal combustion engine (ICE) models -- Amaze sedan, City sedan and Elevate SUV. The City also has a hybrid option, in the form of the City e:HEV.
Moneycontrol recently reported that Honda is planning to introduce a hybrid variant of the Elevate in the second half of 2026. A Honda EV will also enter the market next fiscal.
