US President Donald Trump reportedly spoke at length with Venezuela’s María Corina Machado following her Nobel Peace Prize victory, with one source describing the call as “extensive” and saying it “went well", according to Bloomberg.
Even though Trump has not publicly reacted to the peace prize announcement, he did share Machado’s post on social media -- a post in which she dedicated the award to him. “I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!” she wrote.
In the same message, Machado added, “This recognition of the struggle of all Venezuelans is a boost to conclude our task: to conquer Freedom. We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy.”
Trump reshared her post on his Truth Social account, but offered no remarks or reply -- appearing to be his 'silent' response to the Nobel Committee’s decision.
White House communications director Steven Cheung expressed disappointment over Trump not receiving the prize and accused the Nobel Committee of putting “politics over peace.” Cheung stated, “President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will. The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace.”
While Bloomberg contacted both White House spokespeople and Machado for comment, there was no response.
Trump, who has previously said he believes he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for securing several peace deals around the world during his second term, has not made any public remark about not winning this time.
After her win on Friday, Machado’s emotional reaction drew attention online, as she dedicated the award to both Venezuelans and Trump.
