US President Donald Trump’s massive tax and spending bill passed a key procedural vote in the Senate, moving the legislation one step closer to final approval.
This breakthrough follows after weeks of intense negotiations, as Republicans push to deliver the so-called "big, beautiful bill" to the president’s desk.
Senate Republicans narrowly cleared a procedural step to pass Trump’s ‘One Big Beautiful Act’ in a 51-49 vote, as two of the Republicans opposed the motion to proceed to debate, joining all Democrats. US VP JD Vance also present to act as a tie-breaker if needed.
This procedural step by Senate members advances a bill that would make Trump’s 2017 tax cuts permanent, eliminate taxes on tips and overtime, increase border security funding, and repeal green energy tax credits introduced under the Biden administration.
The procedural vote sets the stage for a final Senate decision on the sweeping legislation, expected to take place Sunday or Monday.
Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, are demanding that the entire 940-page bill be read aloud once it reaches full debate on the Senate floor.
"We will be here all night if that's what it takes to read it," Schumer wrote Saturday on X.
Although the bill cannot officially pass the Senate until the final vote, the procedural approval marked a significant test for Thune.
The vote follows weeks of internal strife and disagreement over the massive package, which revealed deep policy divisions and strengthened the stance of several steadfast Republican opponents.
Trump had warned Senate Republicans that a failure to pass his “Big Beautiful Bill" would be an “ultimate betrayal". The White House said the bill reflects the shared priorities of both Congress and the Trump administration.
