US President Donald Trump on Monday announced his plan to impose hefty tariffs on imported furniture, aiming to revive North Carolina’s shuttered furniture industry and support domestic manufacturers.
"In order to make North Carolina, which has completely lost its furniture business to China, and other countries, GREAT again, I will be imposing substantial Tariffs on any Country that does not make its furniture in the United States. Details to follow!!!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.
This comes after his September 25 announcement of a 100 per cent tariff on branded or patented pharmaceutical products. At that time, he also outlined plans for a 50 per cent tariff on kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and related items, along with a 30 per cent tariff on upholstered furniture. The move is part of Trump’s broader push to incentivise domestic manufacturing.
Trump has, in a separate Truth Social post on Monday, also renewed his threat of imposing steep tariffs on films made outside the United States, claiming his country's industry has been "stolen" by others.
Trump's remarks come shortly after he threatened a slew of new tariffs to be imposed this week on branded pharmaceutical products, furniture, as well as heavy trucks respectively.
