US President Donald Trump hosted a Diwali celebration at the White House on Tuesday, joined by members of the Indian-American community, diplomats, and senior officials, as he extended festive greetings and reflected on his ties with India.

Trump began his remarks by extending “warmest wishes to the people of India,” adding that he had spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in the day. “We talked about trade… He’s very interested in that. Although we did talk a little while ago about let’s have no wars with Pakistan,” Trump said. “The fact that trade was involved, I was able to talk about that. And we have no war with Pakistan and India. That was a very, very good thing. He’s a great person, and he’s become a great friend of mine over the years,” he added.

The president then led the ceremonial lighting of the Diya, describing it as a “symbol of faith in the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.” He said, “During Diwali, the revellers recall ancient stories of enemies defeated, obstacles removed, and captives freed. The glow of the Diya flame reminds us to seek the path of wisdom, to work with diligence, and to always give thanks for our many blessings.”

On Monday, Trump had also issued an official Diwali message, calling the festival “a time for unity, hope, and celebration.” “Today, I send my best wishes to every American celebrating Diwali – the ‘Festival of Lights’,” he said in a statement, noting that for many, the occasion serves as “a reminder of light triumphing over darkness.”

He further said the festival is “not only a religious observance but a time to bring families and friends together to celebrate community, draw strength from hope, and embrace a lasting spirit of renewal.”
