US President Donald Trump on Saturday said he will deploy U.S. troops to Portland, Oregon, to confront what he described as “domestic terrorists,” escalating his controversial use of federal forces in American cities.
In a post on Truth Social media, Trump said he had directed the Department of Defense to “provide all necessary Troops to protect war-ravaged Portland,” adding that he was authorizing “full force, if necessary.”
He claimed the move was needed to safeguard Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities, which he alleged were “under siege from Antifa and other domestic terrorists.”
Trump’s announcement comes amid heightened tensions following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, an incident that has fueled his broader campaign against what he labels the “radical left.” He has repeatedly blamed left-wing groups for the country’s political unrest and violence.
Earlier this month, Trump described Portland as being “like living in hell” and signaled he was weighing military intervention. His administration has already deployed federal forces in other cities, including National Guard troops to Los Angeles during the summer and to Washington, D.C., as part of a law enforcement crackdown.
In Tennessee, Memphis officials are preparing for the arrival of National Guard troops. On Friday, Republican Governor Bill Lee confirmed that forces would be included in a broader surge of resources to tackle crime in the city.
With Saturday’s announcement, Trump has widened the scope of his federal deployments, intensifying debate over the use of military and federal law enforcement against domestic unrest.
