Philippine officials defended former President Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest and transfer to the International Criminal Court before the Senate, amid claims he was unlawfully taken at the request of a foreign entity.

Duterte, the first Asian ex-head of state to face trial at the ICC, was arrested last week and sent to The Hague, where he is accused of murder as a crime against humanity for his deadly "war on drugs" during his 2016-2022 presidency.

His handover sparked outrage among supporters, family, and allies, who have petitioned the Supreme Court, arguing the arrest was unlawful and the ICC lacks jurisdiction over the Philippines.

Duterte appeared before the ICC's pre-trial chamber on March 14 and remains in ICC custody, with his next appearance scheduled for September.
