The streets of Los Angeles, already simmering with chaotic protests against federal immigration raids, erupted into a new dimension of tension today as President Donald Trump ordered deployment of hundreds of US Marines, despite objections by state officials.

The 700 crack troops are set to join National Guard soldiers, amping up the militarization of the tense situation in the sprawling city, which is home to millions of foreign-born and Latino residents.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said that the move by Trump was fulfilling "the deranged fantasy of a dictatorial president".
