In a striking reflection of how geopolitics can influence consumer behavior, Indian travelers have responded decisively to Turkey and Azerbaijan’s perceived pro-Pakistan tilt. According to new data from visa processing platform Atlys, visa applications to both countries have plunged by 42 percent following public statements of support for Islamabad.
The report highlights a notable 60 percent increase in users abandoning visa applications mid-way within just 36 hours of the diplomatic developments, signaling a sharp, sentiment-driven shift in travel intent.
Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO of Atlys, described the trend as “instinctive and behavioural,” noting that Indian travelers did not need overt calls to boycott but instead made decisions organically. “People didn’t need to be told to avoid certain destinations. They simply moved on, guided by instinct, information, and access to alternatives. That’s what modern travel looks like,” he said.
Turkey and Azerbaijan have been among the most popular travel destinations for Indian tourists in recent years, known for their unique blend of culture, affordability, and visa-friendly policies.
Between January and March 2025, Turkey and Azerbaijan experienced a 64% year-on-year increase in visa applications from India. Cities such as Istanbul, Baku, and Cappadocia were rapidly gaining popularity among Indian tourists, particularly younger travelers and first-time visitors, thanks to their affordability, short flight times, and rich cultural appeal.
However, their recent overtures to Pakistan, especially during a time of heightened tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad, have not gone unnoticed.
In response to the surge in anti-Turkey and anti-Azerbaijan sentiment, Atlys confirmed it had paused all marketing efforts promoting travel to the two nations. “We stand by India and in solidarity with national sentiment,” Nahta said.
The report revealed that travelers aged 25 to 34 were the primary drivers of the exit trend, making up over 70% of all mid-process application drop-offs for Turkey.
The data from Atlys also shows that many of those who canceled or dropped visa applications have begun searching for alternative destinations in Southeast Asia and Europe. Platforms are now observing increased demand for countries perceived as neutral or friendly to India, including Thailand, Vietnam, and parts of Eastern Europe.
