Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday backed India after it carried out deep missile strikes on terror infrastructure at nine sites in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan.
"No nation should have to accept terrorist attacks being launched against it from land controlled by another country. India is justified in striking terrorist infrastructure. There can be no impunity for terrorists," Sunak wrote on X.
Sunak earlier had condemned the "barbaric" attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam in which 26 people were killed. He also affirmed that the UK stands in solidarity with India.
"The barbaric attack in Pahalgam has stolen the lives of newlyweds, children, and families simply seeking joy. Our hearts break for them. To those mourning - know that the UK stands with you in sorrow and solidarity. Terror will never win. We grieve with India," he had said.
Earlier in the day, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer urged "dialogue" and "de-escalation" between India and Pakistan.
"Rising tensions between India and Pakistan will be of serious concern for many across Britain," he told parliament.
"We are engaging urgently with both countries, as well as other international partners, encouraging dialogue, de-escalation and the protection of civilians," he added.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy also called for "restraint" between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
"The UK government is urging India and Pakistan to show restraint and engage in direct dialogue to find a swift, diplomatic path forward," he said in a statement.
