In a shocking incident outside Adiala Jail, Aleema Khanum, sister of former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, was struck with an egg while addressing the media. The attack took place during the hearing of the Toshakhana case involving Imran Khan. The incident was caught on camera and the video is circulating widely on social media, showing Aleema reacting calmly but visibly shocked.
The footage shows the egg hitting Aleema Khanum on her face before falling on her clothes. A woman at the scene can be heard shouting, "Who the hell is this" and "Kisne kiya yeh" (Who did this). Aleema kept her composure and told PTI supporters present, "Koi Baat Nahi, Jaane Do," in an attempt to calm the crowd and identify the attackers.
Two women arrested
Rawalpindi police said two women were arrested for hurling the egg at Aleema Khanum. According to police, the women were reportedly PTI supporters. The egg was thrown after Aleema allegedly dodged a question posed to her by journalists.
The incident has drawn widespread criticism. Barrister Gohar Khan condemned the act and emphasised that the family should be provided security to prevent such incidents in the future. He urged the government to take notice of the matter.
Backlash on social media
Several PTI supporters denounced the attack online. One X user wrote, “We strongly condemn this act. Such behavior is not only unethical but also unfortunate, as it turns political disagreements into insults and attacks. Differences of opinion are one thing, but civility and respect should never be abandoned.” Another user alleged, "This disgraceful act is by Asim Munir and the Noon League; these people are extremely afraid of Khan and his family."
Tense exchange with journalists
The press interaction turned tense after pointed questions were raised about reporter Tayyab Baloch, who faced online trolling after raising allegations on social media. Baloch had questioned Aleema regarding the purchase of a property using donation funds, a matter also highlighted by journalist Ammar Solangi. He alleged that PTI’s social media team initiated a campaign against him and that he even received a threat following his post.
Journalists confronted Aleema, asking, “You did not answer the question; instead, Tayyab Baloch was threatened. Is asking a question a crime? Do you only respond to questions of your choice?” Aleema denied issuing any threats and left the premises shortly after the egg attack.
