Nepal’s former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, were brutally assaulted after Gen Z protesters stormed their residence in Budanilkantha, Kathmandu.
As the unrest escalated, local media and videos circulating on social media showed demonstrators targeting government buildings as well as the homes of senior political leaders.
Videos from the incident show Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba being kicked, punched, and manhandled by protesters after they stormed her residence. In chaotic scenes, another group of demonstrators intervened to shield her from further assault.
The Deubas appeared bloodied, with video footage showing the Nepali Congress leader being aided to safety.
In the initial footage, the couple is seen trying to reason with the crowd as protesters escorted them out of their home. “Sorry bol,” a protester can be heard saying. Later videos show a bloodied Sher Bahadur Deuba sitting on the ground as the Army carried out their rescue. The couple is reported to be severely injured but alive.
This came hours after Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, wife of former Nepal Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, died after protesters allegedly set her on fire inside their residence.
Protesters reportedly trapped Rajyalaxmi before torching the house. However, the Army intervened, deploying helicopters to evacuate several ministers to safer locations.
In the wake of escalating unrest, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday, intensifying the chaos across Nepal. The violent protests, triggered by a ban on major social media platforms and growing anger over corruption, have claimed at least 19 lives and left hundreds injured.
The Nepal Army has since assumed control of key locations, including Tribhuvan International Airport and Singhdurbar, deploying troops to secure critical infrastructure and heritage sites. Flights were disrupted after protesters attempted to storm the airport premises.
