China on Monday firmly denied allegations by US President Donald Trump that it had secretly conducted nuclear tests, reiterating its long-standing commitment to peaceful development and responsible nuclear policy.

In response to Trump’s remarks on CBS’s 60 Minutes, where he claimed that Russia and China were conducting underground nuclear tests and suggested the United States might do the same, Beijing dismissed the accusations as baseless.

“China has always adhered to the path of peaceful development, pursued a policy of no first use of nuclear weapons, upheld a self-defence nuclear strategy and abided by its commitment to suspend nuclear testing,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said.

She reaffirmed that China’s nuclear strategy remains purely defensive and that the nation strictly observes its international obligations. “China has always adhered to the path of peaceful development,” Mao said, adding that Beijing continues to contribute to global peace and security.
