The much-anticipated Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, also known as the Samruddhi Mahamarg, is set to be completed with the inauguration of its final 76-km stretch on June 5, 2025. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will officially open the last segment, connecting Igatpuri in Nashik to Amane in Thane—bridging the mountainous terrain that was the final missing link.
This milestone will reduce the travel time between Nagpur and Mumbai from a tedious 16 hours to just 8 hours, cutting the journey in half and making this 701-km corridor India’s fastest expressway.
What Makes the Samruddhi Expressway Special?
Built at an estimated cost of Rs 1,182 crore, funded by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the expressway boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure:
- Speed Designed Up to 150 km/h for faster, safer travel
- Three Major Interchanges: Igatpuri, Kutghar (Shahapur), and Amane (Thane)
- Longest Road Tunnel in India: A 7.8-km tunnel at Kasara Ghat reduces travel time between Igatpuri and Kasara to just 8 minutes
- Extensive Greenfield Route: Featuring 65 flyovers, 24 interchanges, 6 tunnels, 33 major and 274 minor bridges, and 300+ pedestrian underpasses
- Covers 10 Districts and 390 Villages, boosting connectivity across Maharashtra
- Connects the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai—the country’s largest container port—to the Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN), making it a critical logistics corridor for national and international trade
Before the expressway’s completion, travelers had to tackle the winding, steep Kasara Ghat roads, climbing 450 meters through narrow paths. The new expressway bypasses these difficulties, promising a smoother and safer journey with less traffic congestion.
Once operational, the expressway will offer:
- Reduced travel fatigue and better safety standards
- Efficient road connectivity boosting tourism and business between Mumbai and Nagpur
- Enhanced logistics support to accelerate trade and economic growth in Maharashtra and beyond
Why the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway Matters for Travelers and Businesses
This high-speed corridor is not just a road—it’s a game-changer for Maharashtra’s infrastructure and economy. For travelers, it means more time at destinations and less time on the road. For businesses, it’s a faster, reliable route to move goods between key commercial hubs.
Whether you’re a daily commuter, long-distance traveler, or logistics operator, the Samruddhi Mahamarg promises to transform travel and transport in central India.
