Kashmir weather alert: Heavy snowfall predicted from January 4 to 6

Jammu and Kashmir is currently under the influence of a weak western disturbance, which is expected to persist until tomorrow, bringing light snowfall to scattered areas in the region. According to the Meteorological Department, more widespread snowfall is predicted from January 4 to 6, with the possibility of heavy snowfall in the higher reaches during this second spell.

The region is in the midst of Chillai-Kalan, the harshest 40-day winter period, which is known for its extreme cold and frequent snowfall. This period plays a crucial role in water conservation as snow accumulates in the mountains, melting during the summer to meet water demands. However, heavy snowfall during Chillai-Kalan also leads to disruptions in daily life, including blocked roads, interrupted power and water supplies, and the suspension of both surface and air travel, particularly affecting Srinagar and remote areas.

The administration has stated that preparations are in place to handle any potential challenges arising from the snowfall, with efforts focused on maintaining essential services and clearing key routes.
