In a significant reshuffle of global travel power, Singapore has reclaimed the top spot in the Henley Passport Index 2025, emerging as the world’s most powerful passport with visa-free access to an unmatched 195 destinations. Japan, a long-time leader, follows closely in second place, offering access to 193 destinations, thanks to its renewed visa-free ties with China post-COVID.
India’s Passport Drops in Ranking
India, however, has experienced a setback, slipping five spots to rank 85th in the Henley Passport Index 2025. Indian passport holders now enjoy visa-free travel to just 57 destinations, sharing the spot with Equatorial Guinea and Niger. This decline underscores the increasing challenges faced by Indian travelers in an evolving global mobility landscape.
European Leaders Take a Hit
Notably, former European front-runners like France, Germany, Italy, and Spain now share the third position with Finland and South Korea, offering access to 192 destinations. Meanwhile, a cluster of European nations—including Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and Sweden—sits at the fourth spot with 191 destinations, followed by the UK, Belgium, and Portugal, tied in fifth with 190 visa-free destinations.
UAE’s Meteoric Rise
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as a mobility powerhouse, soaring to 10th place with visa-free access to 185 destinations—a remarkable rise that highlights the nation’s increasing global influence.
Western Nations Face Setbacks
Traditional leaders like the United States and the United Kingdom have seen notable declines. The U.S. has slipped to ninth place, down from second a decade ago, while the UK now ranks fifth, a significant fall from its peak position in 2015. Similarly, Canada now ranks seventh, reflecting broader geopolitical shifts.
China Climbs the Ranks
China has shown one of the most striking improvements, jumping from 94th in 2015 to 60th in 2025. Over the past decade, the country has added 40 new destinations to its visa-free access list, signaling its growing diplomatic and economic outreach.
Struggles at the Bottom
At the lower end of the index, Afghanistan remains at the bottom, with its citizens gaining visa-free access to only 27 destinations. Other countries in the lower rankings include Pakistan and Yemen, tied at 103rd with 33 destinations.
