When you think of Europe’s best food destinations, Italy, France, or Spain probably come to mind. But a new study has revealed a surprising champion — and it’s not in any of these foodie powerhouses.

According to new research by travel company Saga, Budapest, Hungary has officially been crowned Europe’s most authentic food city. The study analysed over 5,000 restaurants across 125 European cities, tracking how often the words “authentic” and “traditional” appeared in Google reviews alongside overall ratings. And topping the list? The Hungarian capital — a city that perfectly blends history, heartiness, and honest flavours.

A Rising Star on Europe’s Culinary Map

Long known for its ruin bars, Danube views, and steaming thermal baths, Budapest is now making waves for another reason — its food. With new Michelin-starred restaurants joining its dining scene each year and the recent launch of Central Europe’s first Time Out Market, the city’s culinary identity is being celebrated like never before.
