Imagine standing in a valley where temperatures plummet below -40°C, snow blankets the mountains for months, and life thrives against all odds. Welcome to Dras, the coldest inhabited village in India and famously the second-coldest permanently inhabited place in the world, after Oymyakon in Siberia, Russia. Nestled deep in Ladakh’s Kargil district, this icy outpost—dubbed the “Gateway to Ladakh”—is a breathtaking blend of natural splendour, history, and extraordinary human resilience.

A Town Forged in Frost Perched at 3,300 metres (10,800 feet) above sea level along the Srinagar–Leh Highway, Dras experiences winters few can imagine. Temperatures regularly drop to -20°C to -25°C, with historic lows reaching -60°C in 1995. Yet, around 22,000 hardy residents call this frozen valley home. Daily survival relies on thick stone houses, wood-burning stoves, and heavy layers of wool and fur.

Summers are a stark contrast, transforming Dras into a lush agricultural hub producing barley, potatoes, peas, and apricots. Local markets bustle with fresh produce and traditional handicrafts, offering a glimpse into the culture of a resilient Himalayan community.
