Every year, Time Out publishes its annual ranking of the world’s greatest cities. For this list, the survey specifically focused on Gen Z, gathering insights from over 18,500 locals under 30. Participants shared their views on happiness, affordability, inclusivity, nightlife, and culture, while a panel of Time Out experts weighed in, producing a definitive guide to the cities where Gen Z thrives the most. Here’s a closer look at the ten cities Gen Z can’t get enough of in 2025:
1. Bangkok, Thailand
Topping the list, Bangkok scores high in happiness and affordability. Over 84% of Gen Z residents say they’re happy here, while 71% call it budget-friendly. It’s also the easiest city to make friends, making it perfect for social butterflies.
2. Melbourne, Australia
Australia’s cultural capital ranks second, praised for diversity and inclusivity (77%) and its art scene (96%). With 91% of twenty-somethings rating quality of life as good or amazing, Melbourne is both vibrant and livable.
3. Cape Town, South Africa
Known for breathtaking coastal views, Cape Town boasts affordable nights out (76%) and beauty (71%). Over 82% of young residents report being happy, making it a thrilling yet relaxed place to live.
4. New York City, USA
The Big Apple is exhilarating, with 84% of Gen Z raving about its nightlife and 82% appreciating its walkability. NYC remains a hotspot for those seeking constant excitement and urban adventure.
5. Copenhagen, Denmark
Voted the world’s most liveable city, Copenhagen earns high marks in happiness (64%) and even romance (54%). Gen Z residents love the balance of city life with access to nature.
6. Barcelona, Spain
A city of joy and diversity, Barcelona sees 71% of twenty-somethings happy with life here. It’s also celebrated for inclusivity, tying with Melbourne for top rankings in this category (77%).
7. Edinburgh, UK
Edinburgh leads in green spaces (95%) and walkability (89%). Its historic streets, parks, and urban planning make it a haven for nature lovers and city explorers alike.
8. Mexico City, Mexico
Affordable and happy, Mexico City wins over Gen Z with 83% reporting happiness and 69% praising its cost of living. It’s a city where culture, energy, and budget-friendliness meet.
9. London, UK
Renowned for free art, culture (96%), and food (95%), London is a paradise for creative minds. Its only downside: affordability, with just 45% calling it budget-friendly.
10. Shanghai, China
Shanghai impresses with modernity, top-tier public transport (96%), and overall happiness (84%). It’s a dynamic, fast-paced city where young residents embrace innovation and efficiency.
