After the lukewarm reception Starfield’s Shattered Space expansion got, many had given up on Bethesda and pinned all their hopes on new things the custom Starfield mods added to the game universe. Now, it seems that the Skyrim and Fallout 4 maker is eager on the idea of giving Starfield the shot in the arm it so badly needs. In a recent developer spotlight video, Timothy Lamb, Lead Creative Producer of Starfield, confirmed that the open-world sci-fi RPG will receive a new story-based expansion and also undergo changes to interplanetary space travel. Until now, planet-hopping in Starfield has been fairly simple unless you are challenged in orbit by ships of the Crimson Fleet or Spacers.
That’s not all; Bethesda is also readying new game systems and features, as well as free updates, to be introduced in the space RPG.
In the video interview, Lamb said: "When it comes to Starfield, I can't wait for players to see what the team has been working on. We have some cool stuff coming, including free updates and features that players have been asking for, as well as a new DLC story.”
"I can't go into all the details just yet, but I will say part of the team has been focused on space gameplay to make the travels there more rewarding. We're also adding some new game systems and a few other smaller delights. There's also some really interesting stuff coming down the pipe from our verified creators."
While that is certainly encouraging news for those looking forward to Bethesda’s overhauls, there wasn’t any mention of the release timeline for the upcoming Starfield expansion and updates. It could be the case that Microsoft is planning to unveil the new Starfield DLC at The Game Awards 2025 this December.
The recent announcements mean that the rumours of new travel options coming to Starfield were actually true. Earlier, a “cruise” option was found in a datamined piece of information on Starfield's space travel gameplay, which led players to suspect that the space flights in Starfield are going to change.
